Why a car makes sense

Villas, beaches and restaurants are spread over steep hills. Taxis are few and expensive over a whole stay, and there is no public transport to plan a holiday around. With a car, a new beach every day is ten minutes away.

Driving in St Barth

Traffic drives on the right, under French rules. The speed limit is 50 km/h everywhere. Roads are narrow and winding with steep sections: drive slowly, use your horn before blind bends and give way to oncoming traffic on the steepest slopes.

A valid licence from your country is accepted for a holiday stay.

Which car to choose

A compact car is enough for two on the main roads. A small 4x4 suits hillside villas and wilder beaches. A convertible is for the coast road and the views.

Is an international driving permit required?

For a holiday stay, a valid national licence is generally accepted. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an international permit or an official translation.

Is parking easy?

At beaches and villas, yes. In Gustavia at peak hours it is tighter: a smaller car helps.
